Family

Derek and Julie have been married since 1986 and have three wonderful sons; Luke, Joel and Andrew. Julie has been a faithful wife and mother while teaching in children’s ministries and singing in choirs.

Salvation

Derek Thomas grew up in the Kansas City area going to church with family. At the age of almost 12 he was convicted of sin and walked an isle during an invitation. During his teen years he had doubts about his salvation, and while attending Missouri State University after a morning service at a local church there, Derek with assurance and clarity gave his heart and life to Jesus Christ.

Ministry Training

After graduation he was married to Julie Brooks, and entered the business world while attending and serving in a local church. Derek’s heart was stirred again, but this time for the gospel ministry and in 1995 he and Julie surrendered to the call of missions.

After deputation they moved to Vilnius, Lithuania in April of 1997. There the Lord allowed them to begin a couple of churches including Vilnius Bible Baptist Church. With the church in Vilnius they also began Bible Baptist Institute, a ministry that helped to train lay leaders and pastors in the doctrinal truths of God’s word. In July of 2006, Derek, after sensing the leading of the Lord, resigned the work to national leadership and returned to the states. When returning, Derek and Julie sincerely sought the Lord for what was next.

Church Ministry

A church in Raymore, Missouri, that had supported the Thomas’ while they were missionaries to Lithuania, had gone through some trials and was considering closing their doors. In August 2007, the Thomas’, after sensing the leading of the Holy Spirit and being asked to come, took the leadership of this ministry as a church plant/re-start. The work was renamed Faith Baptist Church of Raymore, where Derek pastored for 7 years. During this time he became involved with a ministry named Slavic Baptist Institute, a ministry located in the Ukraine to train national pastors and workers.

Missions Today

SBI became in need of a new leadership and in October of 2013 Derek was installed as the new president. It became clear that Derek could no longer pastor and lead SBI, so in the fall of 2014 Derek announced to the church that he was stepping down to give himself to the ministry of SBI. Derek and Julie plan to complete deputation in 2016 and move to Ukraine to better facilitate the ministry of SBI and be personally involved in church planting opportunities.
