Family and The Early Years

Rufus was born in Beaver Falls, PA in 1951 and moved to Ohio when he was eight years old. He grew up in North Canton and met his wife, Bea, while attending Malone College. Rufus and Bea were married August 25, 1972 and reside in Canton, Ohio.

The Lord saved Rufus through the youth ministry of the Canton Baptist Temple led by Rev. Mel Sabaka in September of 1968. He learned through the word of God that he was a sinner who needed a Savior. Rufus repented of his sin and trusted the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Savior after hearing the Gospel. Later he was baptized by immersion and discipled by Rev. Mel Sabaka.

Ministry Training

After several years of involvement in various ministries at the Canton Baptist Temple, Rufus was led to enter full-time ministry. He graduated from Malone College in 1972 with a Bachelor’s degree in religion. He graduated from Ashland Theological Seminary in 1979 with a Master of Divinity in Psychology and Counseling and a Master of Arts in New Testament Greek. He served in Chaplaincy training at Fallsview Psychiatric Hospital in Cuyahoga Falls and Aultman Hospital in Canton earning 2 units in Basic Clinical Pastoral Education. Rufus was licensed to preach in 1983. He served as Associate Pastor for four years at a church in North Canton. He served an internship at the Chapel in Akron where he taught a young couple’s class. He was called to a church in Akron where he served as Senior Pastor for 25 years.

Church Ministry

Rufus has been blessed to have many godly mentors in his life who guided him in church work. He served in a growing church as Associate Pastor for 4 years overseeing several areas: Christian Education, visitation, evangelism, and filling the pulpit as needed. While later serving as full-time pastor, he moved the congregation he served to a new location and led the church through a new church building project located on twenty acres. Rufus has stayed focused on Biblical discipleship and shepherding God’s people over 31 years of ministry.

Ministry Today

Rufus served alongside Pastor Tom Gang from April of 2010 through September 2017 and continues to personally minister within our church body today.
